One of the main reasons that a lot of golf players do not spend more time developing a better mental strategy in their game is probably because it is quite difficult to measure this progress. In fact, you would not touch or see a mental game, while you would quickly notice the difference when changing your equipment or adjusting a swing. So how can you know whether you are getting a positive result on your time devoted to improve your golf mental skills?
What do mental skills mean in a golf game?
In general, you need to learn the definition of mental skills before you can measure it. Being a mental coach for many years, I would talk about this topic for hours, but to put it simply, it is how well you are able to access a best game when playing under the pressure. In other words, it is all about how well you could block the negative distraction out distractions and pay attention to the element that is going to offer you the best opportunity to be successful in a golf game. If you can play well in practice, but find it challenging in competition, this would mean that you need to improve your mental skills more.
Where to start in developing your mental skills?
When some junior players start practicing with me, I provide them the assessment for mental game that will allow me to know what is their baseline is. During this important process, they grade on most the essential aspects of the mental game themselves. Then I offer them the scenarios that they would have been in before and request them to tell me their thought on how they have performed as well as how they felt about it.
After that, we talk about how they can manage their round from a mental aspect (right from the start to the finish) and we begin setting up a “mental plan” for the future golf round together.
The mental plan
As its name, a mental plan will help to set the goals for a golf round. You are not going to be able to develop your physical skills on a course during a game, but you could develop how well you can access the best skills. In general, you can achieve this by following a mental plan. But what should you put in a mental plan? Here is where I am trying to make your mental skills or aspect more “tangible”, you should set clear goals which you could measure if you did them or not. Those are factors that are basically within your control, including:
Your general point of view
Managing your emotions – in respond to negative outcomes
Focus on routines – pick the right visualization, target, triggers and mental rehearsal; accept the outcome; quiet the mind
In between shots – master your ability to remain present
The mental game scorecard
In general, the mental game scorecard will help to measure how well you are sticking to your plan. It is basically a really important exercise, which plays an essential role in helping you to become more aware of your strength as well as weakness in a mental game. As a result, you could learn how to develop your mental skills and play a golf game with more confidence.
